INTERVIEW WITH APRYL WOODCOCK
I had heard abnout a girl named Apryl Woodcock. I had never seen a picture of her. When my dad found her website I was amazed at what she could do. I looked at her website and found her e-mail adress. Since she is amazing I thought people would like an interveiw with her. I e-mailed her questions and she replied. This is her interveiw.
When did you start skatingboarding?
About age 10 1/2 .
Why did you start skatingboarding?
Because it was popular, alot of kids at my school did it and I didn't want to be "left out" when playing so I grabbed a skateboard and skated with them instead! Also my mom had done it and had encouraged me to try it many times before.
How old are you?
I am 12 years old.
Do you do other sports? If so, what is your favorite?
I do other sports and my favorite is cross-country. I really like independent sports like skateboarding and cross-country because you don't have to "do it for the team" you just have to do it for yourself and there alot less pressure going.
What advice would you give to a girl that wanted to skateboard?
I'd tell her that people are going to try to hurt you and get you down about alot of things and if she sticks with it its gonna be a hard path but if she is a strong enough secure person she'll make it through the tunnel. Plus all the mean stuff people might say/do can only make you a stronger person in general so it will all work out, you just have to be patient. Never stop trying & believing, you can do it!
What is your favorite trick?
My favorite trick that I see alot of pro's do would be a fakie 360 to tail but my favorite trick that I do would probubly be either a millerflip or a lein to tail.
What is your hardest trick?
For awile it was the millerflip but I pretty much have those down now, so now its onto the lein to tail. It takes me about 5 trys to land it every day.
Who is the girl pro you most admire? Why do you admire her? How did you meet her?
Gale Webb as an all around athlete/skateboarder because she's still doing the things she did when she was 12 and never has somthing bad to say! Cara-Beth Burnside (or CB) would be my favorite all around girl skateboarder though, I admire them both a great deal and they inspire me alot. I admire Gale and Cara because I know that whatever I do there not going to give up on me and they always have faith in me. I trust them alot and have such a fun time with them both, to me that's all that matters! I met Gale through some guys at Vans skatepark in Ontario and met CB through Gale at an Extreme Sports Show.
What do you like most about skateboarding?
I love the fun and joy I get out of doing it, the people I meet, the places I go, the feeling of happiness inside when I do somthing new or just from skateboarding again and the people in it are great too. They accepted me right from the start and I never got made fun of or put down when I skated. I like the positive vibe and the family type attitude you get when your with skaters, there's just no better feeling than that to me.
When did you get sponsered?
About 1 year and a half ago.
How do you feel about being sponsered?
GREAT, because my grandpa wouldn't be so hard on me when I ripped clothes, chipped skateboards and demolished shoes! Plus I felt like I had accomplished somthing good!
How many contests have you entered?
This is my first year of majorly entering contests so i'd say about 15 so far.
Have you ever been really scared of trick and then got up and pulled it? What trick was it?
Yes! I did that with several tricks. Ive done it with a less-twist (fakie 360 melon) because I knew if i didn't land it i'd be mad for hours, a millerflip in a competition (f/s invert to corkscrew twist or backflip out) any type of revert in a bowl because im always scared of killing myself if the bowl isn't slick, my first leing to tail because I was scared to hang up and the list just keep on going. Infact I did that today and payed the price with a bad knee. I landed the trick but wished I hadn't, somtimes its just time to stop and that's a lesson I need to learn. Im getting better at it but I could use some work in that subject. Its a great feeling when you land the trick that's been on your "wish list" for awile though, its getting to that point that hurts the most.
